Police capture suspected attacker of pregnant veiled woman

Neziha Şahin says she was attacked by a man while she was waiting at a bus stop in Antalya on Thursday.

A man accused of attacking a pregnant veiled woman at a bus stop in the southern province of Antalya was captured by police on Friday afternoon.
Neziha Şahin, 30, told the Cihan news agency that the incident occurred when she went to a bus stop in the Pınarbaşı neighborhood in the Konyaaltı district in the early hours of Thursday. She said a man in his 30s came to the bus stop and began to insult her because of her headscarf.
"How can you go outside with this dress? God never accepts your fast with you dressed up like this," the man said.  Şahin said she told the man he couldn't speak like that, then he began punching her head.
Şahin said she tried to protect her baby while the man hit her several times on the head. She screamed for help but no one was there to help her. She was able to escape when the bus arrived at the scene. The man ran away while a man from the bus tried to catch him.
She went to a police station and lodged a criminal complaint seeking the arrest of the assailant. Şahin also went to a hospital for a medical check, and was told by doctors that her baby was unharmed.
Antalya Police Chief Mustafa Sağlam told press that police units had been searching for the attacker since Thursday and that the suspect, identified by the initials G.E., is being interrogated by police.
